Conjunctivitis, which is often known to the public as \"red eye,\" is an inflammation of the conjunctiva, the connecting membrane of the eye. The conjunctiva is a thin mucous membrane that covers the inner surface of the eyelids and the visible part of the eyeball up to the cornea. What causes allergic conjunctivitis?<\/b><\/h4>

\u00a0<\/p>

Allergic conjunctivitis develops when the mucous membrane of the eye comes into contact with an allergen\u2014a substance that triggers an intensified reaction from the immune system. The conjunctiva is particularly sensitive to various irritants. The list of allergens is quite extensive, and sometimes their precise identification is difficult.<\/p>

The main allergens are:<\/b><\/p>

  • Plant pollen and fungal spores;<\/p><\/li>

  • Household chemical products;<\/p><\/li>

  • Cosmetics and perfumes;<\/p><\/li>

  • Certain medications;<\/p><\/li>

  • Food products.<\/p><\/li><\/ul>

    Types and Symptoms of Allergic Conjunctivitis<\/b><\/h4>

    \u00a0<\/p>

    Allergic conjunctivitis primarily occurs in two forms: acute and chronic.<\/p>

    Acute Allergic Conjunctivitis<\/b>As a rule, it is seasonal in nature. It begins very soon after contact with an allergen in the form of an attack and is characterized by a short-term, episodic course.<\/p>

    The main symptoms are:<\/b><\/p>

    • Swelling of the eyelids:<\/b>\u00a0The eyes feel puffy and heavy.<\/p><\/li>

    • Redness and itching of the eyes:<\/b>\u00a0The most characteristic and bothersome sign. The itching can be so intense that the patient feels a constant urge to rub their eyes.<\/p><\/li>

    • Tearing:<\/b>\u00a0Excessive watery discharge from the eyes.<\/p><\/li>

    • Discharge:<\/b>\u00a0Characterized by a whitish, mucous, and sometimes foamy discharge.<\/p><\/li>

    • Nasal discharge:<\/b>\u00a0Often appears alongside allergic rhinitis.<\/p><\/li><\/ul>

      Diagnosis and Treatment<\/b><\/h4>

      \u00a0<\/p>

      Diagnosis<\/b>\u00a0The diagnosis of allergic conjunctivitis is mostly made based on clinical signs and the patient's complaints. For additional research, the following may be used:<\/p>

      • Allergy tests:<\/b>\u00a0To precisely identify the allergen.<\/p><\/li>

      • Conjunctival swab analysis:<\/b>\u00a0To detect eosinophils (allergy marker cells).<\/p><\/li><\/ul>

        Treatment:<\/b>\u00a0The primary principle of treatment is the elimination of contact with the allergen. If this is impossible, medicinal therapy is prescribed, depending on the severity of the symptoms.<\/p>

        Local treatment includes:<\/b><\/p>

        • Cold compresses:<\/b>\u00a0Reduces swelling and discomfort.<\/p><\/li>

        • Artificial tears:<\/b>\u00a0Washes out allergens and moisturizes the eye surface.<\/p><\/li>

        • Antihistamine and mast-cell stabilizer drops:<\/b>\u00a0Blocks the allergic reaction and reduces itching and redness.<\/p><\/li>

        • Steroid drops:<\/b>\u00a0Prescribed in severe cases, under strict medical supervision.<\/p><\/li>

        • Local vasoconstrictors:<\/b>\u00a0Temporarily constricts blood vessels and reduces redness.<\/p><\/li><\/ul>

          In severe cases, oral medications may be prescribed.\u00a0Systemic antihistamines as well.<\/b>\u00a0Any treatment must be conducted under the supervision of an ophthalmologist.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t
